Soulster Tonebook for fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers - Californication guitar tone settings

A 1955 Gretsch White Falcon is not the guitar you expect from the Chili Peppers. Frusciante chose it for the title track of Californication to get away from the aggressive Strat sound of Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Released as a single in 2000, it went to No. 1 on the US Modern Rock chart.

What makes the tone. The hollow-body Gretsch, strung heavy, gives a warm, round, woody clean tone through a Fender Showman and a Marshall Major, both clean. Verses have almost no effects and rely on the fingers for light and shade. For the solo, a Boss CE-1 adds a subtle vibrato, a slight watery bend on the ringing notes.

The analogue recipe. Hollow-body guitar, a light compressor, a vibrato or chorus for the solo only, then a clean Showman-style amp and natural room ambience. Use the neck pickup and heavier strings if you can. Keep the vibrato barely there, as anything stronger turns the haunting solo seasick.

How to play it. A minor, 96 BPM, no capo, intermediate. Am and F carry the intro and verse; pick the chord notes individually rather than strumming. Frusciante has said the picked figure was inspired by The Cure. A hammer-on and pull-off decorate the Am, but beginners can leave it out and just pick the first four notes.

On a Boss GT-1000 / GX-100 / GT-100. Mix the Tweed Combo and Twin Combo preamps, with Jensen and vintage single-speaker cabs, to get the Showman's round clean. Compression goes in FX1 and the chorus, set as a vibrato, in FX2 for the solo only, with a short room at the end. Set CTL1 to switch the vibrato on for the solo and off again afterwards.

On a Kemper. A clean Fender Showman profile, matched to a Gretsch if you can find one. Run compressor, Vibrato and a Studio Equalizer to shape the woody warmth, then a room reverb. Morph the vibrato in for the solo, and leave the EQ on throughout.

Skip the guesswork. The Soulster Tonebook for fans of Red Hot Chili Peppers → takes “Californication” from map to finished patch — amp, drive, modulation, delay and reverb, with the numbers. Go deeper in our John Frusciante guitar tone guide →
