Soulster Tonebook for fans of Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box guitar tone settings

Steve Albini's rooms are part of this sound. The lead single from In Utero, released in August 1993, was cut at Pachyderm Studio in Cannon Falls, Minnesota, where the chorus guitar bounces off hard wooden walls. It topped the US Modern Rock chart and reached No. 5 in the UK.

What makes the tone. The verses use a clean, sparse arpeggio from a Jaguar or Univox Hi-Flier into a Fender Twin Reverb, given a faint, watery wobble by an Electro-Harmonix PolyChorus or EchoFlanger. Then the chorus arrives via a Tech 21 SansAmp set for high gain: a ferocious, mid-heavy crunch through a Marshall cab. A Boss DS-2 is part of the rig too.

The analogue recipe. Offset guitar in a lowered tuning, compressor, a PolyChorus-style flanger for the verses, a SansAmp-type drive for the chorus, then a clean Twin and a natural room reverb. The flanger goes off when the drive comes on. Keep the verse just wet enough to sound uneasy.

How to play it. The record uses a dropped, lowered tuning, but the book's chart puts it in G sharp minor in standard tuning, with no capo, at 101 BPM and rated intermediate. The same three chords cycle through the whole song, so the drama has to come from dynamics: pick the verses deliberately, almost ominously, then hit the chorus hard.

On a Boss GT-1000 / GX-100 / GT-100. Twin Combo preamp with Jensen and basketweave cab options, booster in its SansAmp mode for the chorus, compressor in FX1, flanger or PolyChorus in FX2, no delay, and a room reverb. Put CTL1 on a verse-chorus toggle that brings in the booster and kills the flanger in one press.

On a Kemper. Load a clean Twin profile, then compressor in Stomp A, an Amp Distortion stomp in SansAmp style in Stomp B, a PolyChorus-style flanger in Stomp C, and room reverb. A morph can flip B on and C off at once; lean towards a bigger room setting for that live, Albini feel.

Skip the guesswork. Every block and every value for “Heart-Shaped Box” is laid out in the Soulster Tonebook for fans of Nirvana →, along with the key, the capo and the chord shapes.
