A debut-album highlight, Know Your Enemy is Rage in full swing — a tight, funky, riff-driven assault built on Tom Morello's percussive drop-D playing and the band's unmistakable lock between guitar and rhythm section.
What makes the tone. The same controlled Marshall crunch that defines Morello's sound: mid-forward, tight and articulate rather than saturated, with drop-D tuning giving the low menace. The riffing is heavily palm-muted and syncopated so it functions almost like a percussion part. Morello's toggle-switch stutters and effect flourishes decorate the arrangement, but the engine is tight amp crunch and rhythmic precision.
The analogue recipe. Drop-D tuning, a Marshall-style amp on a tight crunch — mids up, gain moderate — and the bridge pickup. Palm-mute aggressively for the percussive funk-metal snap. A kill-switch or fast pickup toggling recreates the stutter effects; wah and a Whammy cover the noisier moments. Keep the core riff dry and punchy.
On a Boss GT-100 / GT-1000 / GX-100. A cranked Marshall model, moderate gain, forward mids, tight low end. Add wah and a pitch block for flourishes. If your unit has a momentary/kill-switch assignment, use it for the toggle stutters. Keep the muted riff percussive.
On a Kemper. A tight, mid-heavy Marshall profile with controlled gain. Wah and pitch stomps for the effects; a momentary mute for the stutters. As with all Morello, the groove is in the palm-muting and syncopation more than the gain.
